Tooth Extraction Overview

There are a few reasons why tooth extraction might be recommended for our patients. In general, we only use tooth extraction as a last resort when other treatment options are not viable for protecting your overall oral and bodily health. In some cases, the tooth is severely decayed and cannot be saved with a filling or other dental restoration. If the tooth is infected, tooth extraction might also be recommended to prevent the infection from spreading to other teeth or even your body.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Overview

Impacted teeth are another common reason for tooth extraction. This usually happens with wisdom teeth, which are the third set of molars in the back of your mouth. For many people, their mouths simply do not have enough room for these final molars to grow in properly, resulting in a range of complications. The teeth can grow in at irregular angles, can become trapped beneath the gums, or even push your other teeth out of line. When impacted, wisdom teeth can cause a range of problems, including increasing the risk of developing an infection.

What Is a Tooth Extraction Like?

Tooth extraction is a relatively simple procedure that can be completed in a single visit to our office in Livermore. First, Dr. Modi will numb the tooth and the surrounding gums to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure. For wisdom teeth removal, patients may also choose to have sedation since the procedure may be more involved. The final choice depends on your health and personal preference. Dr. Modi will then use special dental tools to loosen the tooth before removing it from your mouth.

For wisdom teeth removal, which is a bit more complicated, Dr. Modi will need to make an incision in the gums to access the tooth and then remove it in pieces if necessary.

The total duration a tooth extraction procedure can vary significantly. For some teeth, the process can last mere minutes. But for impacted wisdom teeth, it can sometimes take longer and depends on the number of teeth removed during your procedure.

What Is the Recovery Like?

Recovery from tooth extraction is usually pretty straightforward, even for wisdom teeth removal. For the first day or two, you will likely experience some discomfort and swelling with a bit of minor bleeding. To help with this, Dr. Modi will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for your mouth as it heals and reduce the risk of infection. This will usually involve things like rinsing with salt water, taking pain medication, and avoiding hard or chewy foods. For wisdom teeth removal, your recovery might take a bit longer since the incisions in your gums need time to heal.

For regular teeth, we also provide the option for replacing the pulled tooth with dental implants or dental bridges. Dr. Modi will go over your options with you even before you have your tooth pulled, so you can know what your options are for getting your smile back to 100%.

Do I Need Tooth Extraction or Wisdom Teeth Removal?

In order to determine if tooth extraction or wisdom teeth removal is right for you, the first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Modi. During your appointment, he will take the time to fully assess your mouth and dental health through an exam and x-rays. In most cases, we will find a solution that does not involve removing a tooth.

For wisdom teeth, we may recommend removal before symptoms arise based on whether you have enough room in your mouth for them to grow in properly. Most patients tend to have this procedure during their late teens or early adult years.
